VMI Keydets football is the football team of the Virginia Military Institute. It started in 1871, featuring a 4-2 loss to Washington and Lee in a one-game season. VMI would wait another 20 years to perform intercollegiate play in 1891, and has played every season since. Today, VMI plays in the Big South Conference of the NCAA Division I-FCS.

History[]

Every season until 1924, VMI played independently, as most teams did. In 1924, they joined the Southern Conference, which they would leave until 79 years later in 2003. The squad went 6-3-1, and placed 13th out of 19 teams.

VMI left for the Big South in 2003, and is yet to have a winning season in the conference, a streak that dates back to 1981. Still, VMI has won 7 total minor bowl games, 4 Tobacco Bowls and 3 Oyster Bowls.
