Phillip "Sparky" Woods is the 30th all-time head football coach at the Virginia Military Institute. He was previously an assistant coach at 9 different schools, and also for the New York Jets of the NFL. He was a head coach for Appalachian State and South Carolina University. He is in his 3rd season at VMI, and holds a 9-24 record.
Playing Career[]
Woods was a graduate of Carson-Newman College in 1976 and played quarterback and defensive back in his 4 years there.
Coaching Career[]
VMI is Woods' 3rd team head coaching for. First, he coached Appalachian State from 1984-89, posting a 38-19-2 overall record there. Next, he went to South Carolina, where he was the head of the Gamecocks from 1989-93. He was announced as VMI head coach in 2008, and, in his 3rd year, has a 9-24 overall record.
Woods was the assistant at Tennessee, Kansas, North Alabama, Iowa State, Appalachian State, Memphis, Virginia, Mississippi State, Alabama, and the New York Jets.
